Model 110A - Imperial Woodpecker Flying3D Model
This is a 3D animation of an Imperial Woodpecker (Campephilus imperialis) exhibiting several kinds of typical flight patterns (fast-flapping, bounce-gliding and gliding). The Imperial Woodpecker was a very large (up to 60 cm wing length), and now extinct woodpecker previously found in Pine woodlands of Northern Mexico. Deforestation and habitat change likely sped its decline. The 3D model was reconstructed by CG artist Johnson Martin and UMASS Amherst PhD student Josh Medina using Blender and other software.
John McCormick from Occidential College provided funding and guidance. The specimen was reconstructed from a 3D photogrammetry scan of a preserved Imperial Woodpecker from the Moore Lab of Ornithology, as well as from a single video of an Imperial Woodpecker flying from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
